Destiny 2 players looking for a true test of coordination and survival will find exactly what they are looking for inside the Ghosts of the Deep dungeon. The second encounter forces guardians to dive deep into the New Pacific Arcology to face off against a relentless Lucent Hive threat. Fulfilling the mechanics requires a delicate balance between clear communication and high combat awareness under intense enemy pressure.

Navigating to the Shield of Savathun

To reach this challenging section, your fireteam must descend through a series of complex underwater tunnels following the opening ritual. Players will eventually drop into a massive submerged facility filled with hostile forces praying near a central structure. Wiping out the initial waves of Acolytes triggers the official start of the fight and summons Ecthar, the Shield of Savathun.

The physical arena layout features an upper surface room where combat takes place and a lower methane ocean pocket used for mechanics. Evading the boss on the surface while managing incoming ads constitutes the primary challenge of this encounter loop. Ensuring your fireteam has reliable crowd control options will make navigating the early phases significantly safer.

Activating Deepsight and Finding Runes

Progressing the fight requires your team to eliminate three Blistered Knights that spawn around the perimeter of the room. Defeating these knights causes a powerful Keeper of the Deep Ogre to enter the battlefield. Defeating the Ogre reveals a deepsight illusion near the front fountain that grants the entire squad a temporary vision buff.

With Deepsight active, players must look at the main walls to note three specific Hive rune symbols that appear. At least one designated guardian must then dive through the holes into the underwater zone to find matching runes. Touching the correct symbols underwater breaks the initial barrier, though players must carefully manage their pressure gauges while evading Ecthar's underwater form.

Defeating Lightbearers and Depositing Vestiges

Successfully matching the runes triggers the appearance of three Lightbearer Wizards back on the surface area. The team must defeat these high-priority targets and crush their Hive Ghosts to extract a crucial buff called Vestige of Light. The guardian holding this buff must quickly interact with one of the three thrall statues located up the stairs.

Depositing the Vestige of Light must happen before the sixty-second timer expires or the carrying player will instantly perish. Repeating this entire rotation three times successfully prepares the arena for the final damage phase. Team members should coordinate who grabs each vestige to avoid accidental deaths from expired timers.

Lowering the Shield and Defeating Ecthar

Once all three thrall statues are charged, a prominent enemy called the Wellkeeper Knight will materialize near the center fountain. Guardians must immediately defeat this knight to generate a glowing green pool on the ground where it falls. Standing inside this pool grants the team the ability to strip away Ecthar's massive elemental shield.

After the shield drops, players are free to move around and unleash their highest damaging supers and heavy weapons. Close-range options like swords and shotguns paired with a supportive Warlock Well of Radiance yield excellent results during this window. If the boss survives the damage phase, simply repeat the rune and vestige cycle until Ecthar is permanently defeated.
